J. G. Winter
A Little Backstory...
J. G. Winter is a pianist, drummer, composer, arranger and conductor from the North-East of England. His debut solo album, ‘Dance Palace Appeal’, was released on 30th November 2020, comprising jazzy soulful ballads, punching anthems and cinematic musical backdrops, painted on a canvas of decadent, sweeping horns and strings and a punching phat rhythm section.
A practitioner in various musical settings, J. G. Winter has been active since the age of 12. His time is spent shared between playing and writing with soul, jazz and funk artists, assuming the role of musical director for theatre productions and working as an educator in schools and privately. He is co-songwriter and pianist for soul artist Beth Macari and drummer for the band SouLutions. He has scored two plays, conducted pit orchestras for ten years and toured with original music acts for seven years.
‘Dance Palace Appeal’ is an amalgamation of all these experiences. Initial plans were laid out in 2018 for the project, utilising previously unreleased material written for other purposes, coupled with some brand-new ideas and collaborations. Two songs with melodies and lyrics by Beth Macari feature, as well as an appearance by rapper and stand-up artist Jack Fox who has composed and performed a piece set to J. G. Winter’s music. By 2019, recording sessions had begun and the parts slowly came together.
